Greetings from the Toadstool! Last week when I posted our felt toadstool tutorial, one of our lovely readers gave me this fantastic idea. This idea comes from an old issue of 'Family Fun' magazine, (issue unknown)...I don't know what theirs looked like, but this is how we made our outdoor toadstools.
We used...old wooden salad bowls, (these all had cracks in them)
red spray paint
white duct tape
First get all of the dirt off of the outside of your bowl...put it on some newspaper outside and spray it whatever colour you desire, (we did ours red), according to the instructions on your paint.
Then, I cut the white duct tape into little circles and stuck them all over the bowl. I don't know how the duct tape will hold up, but it sure was easy to use...it says it is weather proof, so we'll see.
Drill a hole into the underside of your bowl.
Screw the mushroom "cap" onto a log, and there you go!!!
This was a delightful little project to do for the kids. When one of Ruby's friends came over, one of the first things she said was, "Wow, those are cool toadstools"...they really bring an element of *magic* to our yard!
Thank you again beautiful reader for this idea!
Keith has decided that our toadstools should be "chairs", and he's already cut out a table top for us to mosaic...one of my dreams for our yard is to have a more naturalized playspace for the children, a space that is beautiful and can't help but inspire magical play! I think though, that we will be scouring our local second hand stores for smaller bowls, to make some more enchanting little toadstools to put here and there!
Hope your day is magical & crafty!
with love
Maureen

ReplyDeleteMiddling is quite entranced with your toadstools and can't wait to have some around our fire pit and in the "Invisible Fort". Heck, I can't wait either. LOVE them! As always, thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteOh my are these ever cute!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be looking out for salad bowls at yard sales!
I just love this!! Now to find some big bowls at yard sales. Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWarm wishes, Tonya
OOOh! i want some too...hmmm will start searching for bowls! thank you.
ReplyDeleteI think our local second hand shops and local yard sales are going to be seeing a renewed interest in wooden bowls!
ReplyDeleteI should add that our glorious reader also said that you can use pots for the Toadstool caps...I would love to see if I can find this craft in the Family Fun archives somewhere...to see how they did it!
If you end up making these, send us the link...I'd love to see them!!
Thanks for stopping by the Toadstool today everyone!
love to you all!
Tried to comment yesterday but work computer doesn't allow...LOVE these! Picturing them around our campfire pit. Stumbled on them on Martha Stewart this morning while searching for something else. Hooray for people inadvertently offering alternatives to plastic!
ReplyDeleteI've seen Martha's...they are for indoor use, with wool felt tops, and foam underneath...I'm waiting on getting some wider logs, I think they would be positively enchanting to have inside too.
ReplyDeleteI just checked out Martha's, and I like your way better! The inspiration keeps coming on this amazing blog. We definately want to try these too. They are positively charming!
ReplyDeleteThese are GREAT! Ohh- I want to make some. I can just see them in amongst the pines at the back...
ReplyDeleteYAY! I love your pics. Thanks for adding this craft. I am so glad so many people may now have this wonderful magical decoration in their yards!
ReplyDeleteI want to do this!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you - what an inspiring blog!
Namaste, Nicole

ReplyDeletePlease send to Judithspi@gmail.com would LOVE to see your ideas
DeleteHad the same idea for our old tree stump, except I used some old round flower pots I put a gnome on top n called it a day, but if ur duct tape doesn't hold up then u can use an old laundry soap cap n dip the edges into a can a paint then touch ur toadstool with the cap to get a perfect circle outline n use a paintbrush to fill in the center
DeleteLve them! I am thinking I will HAVE to do some of these...
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I'll have to be on the lookout for wooden salad bowls now, I have quite often seen them at the thrift store with cracks and not wanted to buy them because of that.
ReplyDeleteso cool I am adding this to the list for my little guys first hand made holiday, if I can wait that long. I found that our musical tree was a great way to make the outdoor playspace a but more natural and inspiring than your average swing set. I will post it's making today just for you, and I will let you know when my toadstools are done. Heading to the thrift shop today (yay for 1/2 price day) Thank you for your kind comments on my blog, especially my last post, as I was jsut following your beautiful lead!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Kat

Ahhhh, love this idea too. Almost ready to hop in the car a drive straigh to the nearest thrift store. You have a truly magical blog.
ReplyDeletewonderful. Oh and a toad stool table to match would be awesome. Maybe you could get one of the wood rolls that wire is on from your local electric company. It would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. thanks!
ReplyDeleteCoooooooool! Endlich weiss ich, was aus den alten, hablvergammelten Holzschüsseln beim Trödle werden wird! Bin sooo begeistert und dankbar: DANKE!!! (u.s.w)
ReplyDeleteBora
I realize this is from last year, but we are going to do something like this for our daughter, who is a serious gnome enthusiast, and we're wondering how long the logs are that you used (approx), and how far you buried them in the ground? (you did burry them in the ground, right?).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all your inspiration, this is one of my very favorite blogs and we plan on using lots of your tutorials in the future!
Thank you for the additional info on the toadstools, I'll be sure to send you guys a picture when we get ours done!!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for ideas to make a child size toadstools they can sit on for a backyard birthday. I am inspired by your idea to use tops from old/broken stools and unsplit fireplace logs. May paint one of those wire reels for a table.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this Great idea....
ReplyDeleteLove this idea and might have to set to work making them, now where the find the wooden bowls???
ReplyDeleteyour a cool mom.
ReplyDeleteI made some of these myself, thanks to your image that I found through facebook and then googled and found it here. I was going to post your image first, as a source. I hope you don't mind. If you do, please let me know, and I will take it off immediately. Thanks so much!! I will be posting the blog post tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteSorry. My blog where I will post it is www.pumpkinpiepainter.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteOh Gosh! and to think I threw out a set of those bowls! Darn! I will have to go to the thrift store! Thanks for sharing such a fun project!
ReplyDeleteI have my toadstool ready to go but I'm not sure how to make it stable enough for a toddler to sit on it. Should I dig a hole for the log or screw it on to a plywood base?
ReplyDeleteFor Permenant Color: Paint white the areas you want dots. Then punch out or cut circles from vinyl or contact paper, etc. and place on white areas. Now paint all with red. Remove the circle covers and you have white dots with red backgroound. Spray or paint on an outdoor clear coat and this will last a very long time.
ReplyDeleteThose are such pretty cake stands - love them! I definitely need something better than a plate.
ReplyDeletecheese board & salad bowl
I have been collecting salad bowls to do this for awhile now. LOVE them! Shared here http://siayla.blogspot.ca/2014/01/got-wood-try-these-wood-crafts.html
ReplyDeleteAdore! You rock!Thanks! ♥

ReplyDeleteWhat a super way to recycle wooden bowl
ReplyDeleteSaw these and thought how cute they would be to do with the grandkids while camping and they can have their own little toadstool to sit by the fire! Will let you know how they came out.
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome! On the same "frog" "toadstool" note, the name of my company is "Ribbet". I am definitely going to spot these all around my facility! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSuch a clever idea! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNice. Hire wooden chair
ReplyDeleteevent chair
chiavari chair
led bar
vintage chair
Very cute idea. Couldn't you just paint white spots on them instead of using duct tape?
